5 top tips for prospective product design students

1. Have the passion

This is a no brainer. Before proceeding to study product design at university, you must be living it. Eat, sleep and dream design, this way engaging with your course and getting stuck in to your projects will become second nature. Your parents may believe that undertaking an accounting degree is a good idea but if you know otherwise stick to what you love doing.

 2. Prepare yourself for Late nights

It’s no easy task studying product design, working closely with your tutors is almost the same as working with a client. Taking your work to them will highlight errors and often spark advice about ways you can amend your work. The process of striving for perfection will regularly provide you with a fresh to do list. Innovation and continual improvement is at the heart of product design.

3. It’s not just about making things look pretty

You will soon hear the phrase ‘form follows function’ – Louis Henry Sullivan. If you’re familiar with this phrase, then you know it’s a key principal of design. The function and usability of a product is paramount, followed by its aesthetics

4. Familiarize yourself with materials

Designers use various materials to attribute a meaning or image to their products. Finding the perfect material for a specific application is a tough, lengthy and expensive process. Therefore, It is very important to have an idea what you’re looking for and how you will attempt to apply it.

5. Know what’s what in the world of design and technology

This has some relevance to the first point made. Design must be incorporated into every aspect of your life. Once you’re living it and are ‘in the know’ you will find it very easy to thrive, often finding inspiration and taking influence from sources you may have never even contemplated. If you can’t wait to get stuck in and are unsure how to stay in the loop, the following links should make you a design and tech ace in no time!
