Travel sickness affects a third of people – this figure can rise to almost 66 per cent in more severe conditions. Tim Flaxman, a Norfolk farmer, approached us asking for help with his revolutionary new invention.
After the initial brief and numerous meetings with Tim, we learnt everything about his story. Tim found that by simplifying the visual signals to one eye whilst travelling, the symptoms of motion sickness were significantly reduced. After more tests, Tim realised covering one eye for prolonged periods would result in headaches or eye strain.
Carrying two pairs of TravelShades – one for each eye, was impractical. This led to a symmetrical glasses frame being designed, which could be simply flipped over to cover alternate eyes. Intelligent design is at the centre of the TravelShades brand. We successfully incorporated the unique aspects of the brief – minimising peripheral vision whilst creating a stylish, on-trend solution.
To cater for TravelShades target consumer we needed to develop two unisex designs. The Classic Original, the Horizon Original. We rigorously tested the designs, varied the lenses, the frames and of course the colour! Once a detailed CAD file was created, we 3D printed prototypes in-house to safeguard against any flaws.
Once finalised, a vacuum casting was created to show potential corporate clients, this was made to look and feel as close to the final product to deliver a true sense of what TravelShades could offer.
We helped Tim manage the project from start to finish which included liaising with our close contacts in the Far East. TravelShades are now in full-scale production.
