Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is a computer based simulation which estimates the stresses, strains and displacements of a component under specific loading. It can be used for new product design or existing product refinement.

Once a product design had been finalised and ready for FEA testing, it is assigned specific material properties and set up under the specific loading conditions. The set up of these controlled scenarios are important to get right as they can hugely vary the results and conclusions drawn could be inaccurate.

To accurately test certain design changes each test has to be completed within the same controlled environment. Contributing variables can be adjusted to create a ‘what if’ or ‘worst case’ scenario, an analysis and conclusion can be drawn by comparing the results of each test alongside safety guidelines and designated safety factors. If the component fails and does not satisfy these standards or requirements the design must be altered and re-tested until it can.
